Artful sensory experiences for little creators
Where Creativity Takes Flight ✨

A little background: Chrysalis bridges young learners’ connections within a variety of topics, mediums, books, real-life artifacts, sounds, music, and hands-on learning through sensory play, processed-based art exploration, and engaging craft projects that still celebrate multiple pathways or final products. We help children build upon their prior knowledge and vocabulary skills to construct their own understanding of the world with confidence and joy. We welcome your family with open minds and hearts!

Ahh yes. Ocean week. 🌊🐚 Our Chrysalis creators had Ahh yes. Ocean week. 🌊🐚 Our Chrysalis creators had so much fun embellishing sea shells following this simple process:

✏️Trace the shell on a napkin of your choice. (Soo many great patterns out there in budget-friendly home decor stores.)
✂️Cut out the shape to fit on the underside of the shell and use only the very top thinnest layer of the napkin.
🖌️Paint a layer of a glue-based seal on the underside of the shell, stick the napkin shape down, and smooth out any wrinkles. Top with another painted layer of the seal again.
⏰Let it dry.

Artists can also tear and quilt together pieces of different napkins, draw on the napkins before sticking, paint the other side of the shell, etc. The world is their oyster!! 🦪

Getting our hands in the sand, exploring sea animals and real ocean artifacts, freely mixing colors to paint shells, and drawing on sea glass with acrylic paint markers left us in awe of their splendor! 🐚 🐙🐳🐠

ROAR!! Animals were on the agenda this week, with ROAR!! Animals were on the agenda this week, with a special nod to lions!🦁 I could not ADORE these adorably ferocious creations more. Hands-on exploration of animal habitats and sweet fiction and nonfiction books got our brains thinking. For our lion pride, we used bright watercolors and bold oil pastels along with different sized brushes and sponges to create vibrantly textured manes and faces. Our littlest artists used a window cut out to concentrate colors in sections for a rainbow effect. Joyful, jungle vibes filled the studio! 🍃

Watermelon week 🍉🍉🍉 at Chrysalis was the perfect w Watermelon week 🍉🍉🍉 at Chrysalis was the perfect way to officially kick off summer and use our five senses! Our artists combined shaving cream, red tempera paint, and black beans to create faux watermelon mixtures. We stamped paper in them to dry and create beautiful prints for our watermelon pop-up/peek-a-boo surprises. There was even a watermelon zombie and some little ponies that joined the party. A quick and fun project was using watermelon ice cube trays, green sticky sand and black beans to make watermelon slices to explore. Fresh watermelon was a perfect juicy treat. 🍉 If you live in or around HOCO, MD and are looking for creative, hands-on experiences to engage your child(ren) this summer or in preparation for the fall, register at Chrysaliscraftclub.com. (Link in bio) 🩷🫶🏻We can also come to you for art play dates. Enjoy the sunshine! ☀️

Rocks | Part 2: Mindfully made mandalas and the ab Rocks | Part 2: Mindfully made mandalas and the absolute sweetest inspired artisans graced our studio, and even included me, so thoughtfully. I was honored to join in the exercise of drawing concentric circles with paint markers and then gradually layering shapes and patterns with dark and light colors to compliment one another. I’m excited to keep adding more details and outlines to my rock in a pot entitled, “Lady with a beret.” ☺️ Note the imperative message on the back by one of my wise artists. Enjoy your week and remember that you matter, too. 💜🎨🌈

Creativity “ROCKS”! A truly natural art form inspi Creativity “ROCKS”! A truly natural art form inspired this week’s Chrysalis creations. We learned beautiful lessons about sharing your gifts to spread joy with the story, Scribble Stones, by Diane Alber, formed our own silly scribbles with paint and oil pastels, created caring rock creatures and creepy cactus rocks, and used paintbrushes to move rocks and tempera paint around a canvas. We also had some “inspired artisans” visit the studio to mindfully move paint pens in repetitive shapes with bold colors to create rock mandalas! (Check these out in a reel coming soon.) With artists spanning from age 21 months to 11 years, this week really brought the joy. Rock on! 🤘🏼

Gettin’ buggy wit it. 🐛 🐞 🦋 🐜 🐝 Chrysalis embraced Gettin’ buggy wit it. 🐛 🐞 🦋 🐜 🐝 Chrysalis embraced its inner insect while artists created oil pastel transfer and watercolor prints, impromptu mini Mason jar terrariums (thank you to a talented 4-year-old creator who inspired the idea, along with her addition of paint and oil pastels popping on black scratch art paper!), and sensory bins with some cherished characters, including a very hungry caterpillar, a lonely firefly and a grouchy ladybug. We love you @officialericcarle! Freedom was celebrated with watercolors, dot dabbers, and golf balls to form textured caterpillars living on vine covered paper towel trees. Buggy fun was had by all. 🌳☮️

Hello Creative People, Families, Caregivers, and f Hello Creative People, Families, Caregivers, and friends! ☀️ Summer is near! If you are still looking to create some experiences that build confidence, outlet energy, build-in social time, maintain learning skills, or to just get a breather, register and see the sweetest things unfold. Some Chrysalis community-building events are also in the works! Thank you for following along. With ❤️, Kristin (founder/owner)

Now onto the fun, for-reels! We had a blast stamping bright, beautiful flower arrangements with paint and gallon bags filled with water. Our bags had a purple hue because we used from a previous project with a little leftover pink and blue paint. Gotta love teachable moments.

After testing on paper, our artists stamped on canvas and cut loose with some rapid spreading and “smushing”! (That’s a technical term.) They designed cardboard vases with markers and oil pastels and an impromptu move to add artificial flowers and leaves from one of our sensory bins. There was also some mindfulness and fine motor work happening, and the possibilities were endless!

Dreamy Shape Mobiles, free-spirited Shape people, Dreamy Shape Mobiles, free-spirited Shape people, and fun texturing techniques were on the agenda this week at the Chrysalis Craft Club! We started by using good old fashioned golf balls and cars, as well as drops of paint to roll and create surprising textures on precut shapes. The collaboration and giggles were the highlight for sure! While the shapes dried, we dove into next steps.

Dreamy Shape Mobiles ☁️⭐️Our generous chrysalis tree provided sticks that our little artists wrapped in yarn. I attached three thin colorful strings and that’s where the beads and shapes brought the creations to life.

Groovy Shape People🕺🏻All it took were two craft sticks, tape, googly eyes (which you can never use enough), homemade shape shirts, foam blue zebra pants are we were in business!

A Spin on the 3 Marker Challenge!🖍️🖍️🖍️: My kids e A Spin on the 3 Marker Challenge!🖍️🖍️🖍️: My kids enjoy doing simple 3 marker challenges (close your eyes, pick three markers, draw or color a picture). When I saw this spinner (no brand name or box provided) on a trip to the thrift store, I started dreaming up lots of uses and a spin on the 3 marker challenge was the first. My almost five-year-old insisted that I spin only one color and take three markers in the gradient of that color. It was such a clever way to identify, sort and compare colors, and it kept us engaged for quite awhile at a sibling’s softball practice! We also made one at home and your little creator can too. Draw a circle with lines like a pie chart, color each piece a different color, and spin with a pencil or paintbrush and a paper clip. We used brush markers for our drawings and decided on two themes: “Cute” and “Fruit”. I’m proud to claim the teal magestic Snozzleberry person on roller skates. Eat it and it will make you sneeze. I love how simple interactive projects alongside of children still very in touch with their internal creative sparks keep me imagining too. What might your child spin and create in a Chrysalis class ?🍒🍓🍎🍉

It was all about Dino’s and Unicorns this week at It was all about Dino’s and Unicorns this week at the Chrysalis Craft Club, a magical collab from the start! 🦖🦄 We explored origami paper and watercolors, squishy blocks and tempera paint, rainbow scratch paper and cardboard, spiked mohawks and rainbow manes, paper towel volcanos and swirly paint portals, play dough and gem mines. Each creation transformed and our sweet artists decided on little details that made it their own. The same template for the body yielded different perspectives. Which does your #littlecreator embody more at the moment!? 🦕 or 🦄?

I had to name this sweet explorer, Clementine 🍊🐛, I had to name this sweet explorer, Clementine 🍊🐛, inspired by this beautiful accompanying tune/nod to the old folk ballad. While working on our Chrysalis Tree, which will welcome #littlecreators to class🎨, Clementine emerged. It was just the two of us for a bit and felt like a sign and message to pause. I felt a connection as I sat quietly, observed, and noticed an unexpected trek among beautiful colors, textures and the scattered feelings that come with the unknown. It aligned for me as I take a leap into the process of trusting, trying, falling, rising, learning, loving, and appreciating, aka Living. 🌱 Nature and art have a way of helping me settle and slow down. When I left the space and then returned, Clementine was gone. I suppose a leap was taken and while it may be our first and last visit, the sweet moment will stay with me. ❤️, Kristin (founder/educator at Chrysalis Craft Club)

Thank you @artbarblog for your painted tree post, which inspired an on-going project that has already brought so much joy.
